Insect physical traits and damage patterns are the two types of signs that you should look for if you think you have an infestation. As a type of beetle, these insects have distinct patterns, although they’re only active for a short period of time.
Physical signs of an emerald ash borer infestation start with adult identification:
An emerald ash borer (EAB) also leaves a D-shaped exit hole that is about ⅛-inch in size and will be seen in your trees.
Ash trees with missing bark are the prime time for inspection and identification. You might see signs of tunneling or an S-shape pattern. Tunnels are also filled with fine sawdust.
The most common signs of emerald ash borer infestation appear gradually, as EAB “strangles” a tree from the inside out. These progression patterns give you insight into potential problems and include, but are not limited to:
As larvae feed on the upper branches, your canopy will begin to diminish. Look at the top of the tree and observe if it looks bare or if there are fewer leaves near the bottom. The whole canopy may die over 2 to 3 years.
EAB leaves a flat hole on one side and a curved one on the other when exiting wood. The hole will mimic a D-shape. Often, the exit hole is about ⅛” in size.
Woodpeckers eat larvae underneath the bark and are a sign that you may have an infestation. Look for light-tan patches along the trunk of the tree and along its main branches to see if woodpeckers have stripped away the bark.
EAB attacks cause trees to push out new growth faster, which means you’ll notice green leafy shoots near the base of the tree.
Examine the bark of the tree for 2-5 inch-long vertical cracks. You might even notice tunnels in the wood underneath.
