Very young larvae don't have the jaw strength to eat through a whole blade of grass. Instead, they scrape away the green tissue, leaving behind a clear, translucent membrane. From a distance, this can make patches of your lawn look like they have a silvery sheen or a light coating of frost, even in warm weather.
Unlike disease or drought, which usually stay in one spot or move slowly, armyworm damage moves with appetite and speed. You may notice brown areas expand several feet per day.
Armyworms grow, eventually eating entire leaves that look torn or chewed. Severe cases end with grass being eaten to the crown.
Armyworms hide deeper in the grass during the day to escape the intense Texas heat. Shine a flashlight over your yard at night and you'll easily spot the active larvae climbing to the tops of the blades to feed.
Sometimes, the signs of armyworm damage aren’t apparent until you start seeing the other biological changes. You might notice an increase in bird activity, frass (caterpillar droppings) or moths, which are all signs of an infestation.
